When you’re young, you get excited about going on vacation. When you get older and you’re responsible for planning your family’s vacation, you’ll get excited, but you’ll also be a little nervous.
That’s because you know what can happen while on vacation.
The kids and other family members get tired, cranky, and in some cases, even sick. Instead of getting excited about your vacation, you’re worried that it will be an energy-draining, upsetting experience for everyone.
The solution is to plan a vacation that ensures your entire family will feel great from start to finish, but how do you do that?
Schedule Things the Whole Family Will Love
You shouldn’t feel like you’re dragging yourself out of bed in the morning while you’re on vacation. Unfortunately, that’s how some family members feel when things are planned that they don’t want to do.
It’s important to schedule things the whole family will love. For example, when vacationing in Florida, take a break from the theme parks and schedule a ride aboard the Jungle Queen Riverboat. With water, food, and entertainment, there’s something for everyone to love!
Have something you want to do, but no one else wants to? Don’t be afraid to separate for certain activities during your vacation. For example, mom can take a few kids to the beach while dad takes the kid who wants to check out that weird museum downtown.
Plan for Plenty of Downtime
Every vacation requires at least a little bit of planning, but most families take planning activities a little too far. They end up with an over-scheduled vacation that leaves everyone feeling drained.
Stop over-planning your vacation and make sure you plan for plenty of downtime too. With a little free time every day, the kids will actually have time to put on their suits and check out the pool in the hotel while you catch up on a good book.
Having plenty of downtime in your schedule also means you have the flexibility to plan things on the spot. There may be a fun event or attraction you want to check out that you’ll actually have the time for if you don’t over-plan!
Get Plenty of Sleep
Another problem with over-planning is the fact that many people come back home feeling like they need a vacation from their vacation. Not only because being so busy is exhausting, but also because it means there’s less time for sleep!
It’s important to do your best to get a full eight hours of sleep when you’re away from home. However, it also includes making sure you create a sleep environment that enables you to relax. A few tips include:
- Pack earplugs
- Pack an eye mask
- Bring your own pillow
- Install a sleep machine app on your phone
- Get another room for the kids
Don’t Throw Your Diet out the Window
We do a lot of things we normally wouldn’t do on vacation. That includes eating food we wouldn’t normally eat in quantities we wouldn’t normally eat it in.
There’s nothing wrong with treating yourself while you’re on vacation, but you shouldn’t completely throw your diet out the window. There are many tips you can follow when it comes to eating on vacation, but simple rules are the best.
A few rules your family may want to follow include:
- Eat at least one fruit or vegetable with every meal
- Always buy the smallest portion
- Only eat a special treat once a day
- Only drink water before lunch and after dinner
Find Fun Ways to Be Active
By all means, if you have to get in your steps, check out the gym in the hotel. However, don’t expect that the rest of your family will be as diligent as you are about getting physical activity.
Instead, strive to find ways to stay active without working out. If you can make it fun, everyone in your family will be more likely to move their bodies and enjoy doing it. For example, go for a long walk, rent bicycles, or try an area activity, like standup paddle boarding if you’re vacationing on the lake.
Stretching in the morning is another easy way to prime your body for the day and ensure you stay flexible throughout your vacation!
You may feel excited about leaving, but if you want to maintain that excitement throughout your vacation, it’s important that you find ways to keep everyone in your family happy and healthy with the tips on this list.
