Fun Yard Games To Play This Summer!

Summer……just saying the word makes me think of fun, relaxing times together as a family. It’s a time to make special memories that will last a lifetime.  And there is nothing better than getting outside in the evening after dinner and playing a game together.  You can even invite your neighbors to join in the fun!

Here are just a few that my family has enjoyed playing over the years:

Bean Bag Ladder Toss Game – Take a ladder from the garage and hang a sign from each rung with a number on it. Toss beanbags or a small ball through the different rungs to earn points.  The player with the most points at the end of the game wins (maybe do 5 – 10 rounds depending on the time allotted for playing).

Manhunt – Choose one to three players to be fugitives who hide while other players (called the hunters) count.  Count to 50.  Then the hunters try to find and then tag the fugitives.  Once tagged the fugitives must join the hunters side.  The last fugitive who has managed to avoid being tagged is the winner.

Glow in the Dark Bowling – Take 10 bottles of water and add a glow stick to each one.  Use them as bowling pins to bowl in the dark on your driveway. Use a hard ball like a basketball so that the pins will fall.

Blanket Relay – Take some old sheets or blankets (maybe even large towels) and pull your partner across the lawn.  Race with others doing the same.

Capture the Flag – Divide into two teams.  Each team has a designated territory and a flag (or item of your choice) on their base.  Players try to capture the other teams flag and make it back to their own home base without being tagged and before their team’s flag is stolen.  If tagged a player goes to “jail” until one of his teammates can tag him back into the game.

Pop the Balloons – Players have a balloon tied on each of their ankles.  Players run around and try to pop each other’s balloons using their feet only.  Whoever still has balloons intact the longest is the winner.

Lawn Twister – Spray circles on your lawn to look like a Twister board.  We just shout out the commands like this: “Charlie, left leg, blue!” “Tracy, right hand, green!”.  It’s fun and gets everyone laughing!

Freezer Shirts –  Wet a T-shirt for each person that will be playing the game and of course they must fit (kids can be big). Fold the shirts and put inside a zip lock bag.  Put them in the freezer.  When you are ready to play the game give each person their shirt.  The first person that can get their cold shirt on wins the game.

Kick the Can – One person (or a team of people if the group is large) is designated It and an empty can is placed in the open playing field. With eyes closed, It counts to an agreed upon number, and the other players run and hide. It then tries to find and tag each of the players, always keeping a watchful eye on the can. Any player who is tagged is sent to the “jail,” usually in plain sight of the can. The rest of the free players attempt to kick the can before being tagged out. If they can kick the can without being caught, they set all the captured players free.

And of course there are the store bought games that you can play, too!

As you can see, the fun is neverending!  There is no excuse to not get out there and play!  A family that plays together, stays together!

Happy Summer!  🙂
